FHSAA Statement on NCAA June Scholastic Boys’ Basketball Events

The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) recently developed criteria for State Associations to host a boys’ basketball player evaluation and recruiting event (June Event).

Unfortunately, the required criteria for the June Event excludes an option for girls to participate and excludes student-athletes who do not attend a Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) member school. Both exclusions are contrary to Florida State Law, Federal Court decisions and the FHSAA’s quest to provide equal, fair and equitable opportunities for all student-athletes alike.

In the best interest of all our Florida high school student-athletes, the FHSAA has made the decision to not host nor coordinate an event. The FHSAA requested that the Florida Association of Basketball Coaches (FABC) be permitted to host the June Event for those wishing to participate, but the request was denied by the NFHS.

In future years, it is the Association’s hope the NCAA and NFHS will invite the FHSAA into its discussions to further develop the idea and extend the opportunity provided there is equality for all student-athletes wishing to participate.
